The Paumanok Review :: Late Winter 2005 :: Volume 6, Edition 1, Number 21

Not often a site comes along that's worth a link solely on the merit of its design, but here's one. Were I in a more balanced mood I might sit and read one of the stories, but it's hot and I'm cleaning up a spywar crippled machine for one of Cybil's friends, so I'll leave it up to you to decide whether there's anything worth reading.

Diary of an Ass Monkey

Today's Diary of an Ass Monkey merits a link, it is quite excellent.

Palm Springs

Ok, since I'm too lazy to provide anything more than an open directory of last weekend's photos from Palm Springs, here at least is a fairly large thumbnail to give you a sample of how crazy the plants were.

desert plant that looks like a disembodied alien brain with green tenticles

Lesson learned last weekend: if you hike a half mile through the desert to get to a canyon, even if that canyon is shaded and has a stream that you can wade in, you still have to walk that half mile back through the 115 degree desert to your car, which by the way is no longer in the shade.

Update: since I'm clearly too lazy to make a gallery myself I've uploaded the photos to a flickr: Palm Springs Weekend Getaway

So that's how these designers come up with those little details! via cameron moll.

Favorite Plot Structure

After seeing another Serenity screening I decided to bust out the Firefly DVDs and listen to the commentary. One of the episodes with extensive director commentary about the editing the plot structure is Out of Gas, which reminded me of this post I started writing 10 months ago and never finished. So here it is.

My favorite stories are those that start near the ending, proceed through the middle while flashing back to the beginning and forward to the end, until the middle catches up to the end. Examples:

Can you think of any other movies/episodes that have this structure?
