I should have gotten hiking poles a long time ago. They feel perfectly natural for me, but then again I grew up using cross-country ski poles (the last half-mile down to my dad's house isn't plowed in the winter, so skis or snowshoes are necessary). I've never liked hiking downhill, hard on the joints, but with the added balance of an extra 2 legs I can hike down more aggressively, under power rather than braking. Overall I probably expend more energy hiking with arms as well as legs, but that's a good thing since part of the reason I'm hiking is for exercise since I don't believe in working out.
